Montpellier is a city located in the south of France which can be easily reached from the border with Spain. This city is elegant and younger than others in France, as it does not have a Roman past, but was founded in the XNUMXth century by the Counts of Toulouse. It had an important commercial port but also the first European School of Medicine was founded here.

This city is located in the region of southern France known as Languedoc-Roussillon. In this area we can find beautiful medieval towns, great gastronomy and places that are World Heritage Sites. If we stop in Montpellier we can visit the points of interest in one day.

It's pretty and huge  plaza is the central point of the city, where the streets of its old town converge. It was created in the XNUMXth century and we can still see beautiful buildings around it. It is one of the largest pedestrianized squares in Europe and the ideal place to start your visit to Montpellier. In the square we can see innumerable terraces in which to sit and have a drink while we discover the hustle and bustle of the city. Also, here is the XNUMXth century opera building, which is very similar to that of the Paris opera. In this square we can also see the Fountain of the Three Graces from the XNUMXth century. This fountain attracts attention because it seems to be built on a rock full of vegetation.

In addition, next to it is the building of the oldest medical school in the world, where characters such as Ramon Llul or Nostradamus studied.

Although it is not like the one in Paris, this city also has its Arc de Triomphe, which is also known as the Arch of Peyrou. It was built in the XNUMXth century in honor of Louis XIV. It is at the end of Rue Foch and it is possible to take a guided tour and go up to its terrace to see the city.

In the old town we can find places like Place Saint Roch, the Montpellier botanical garden which is one of the most important in Europe or the Fabre Museum where you can see collections of paintings and sculptures.
