What is diabetes and what are its symptoms?

Diabetes

La diabetes It is a chronic disease that affects metabolism and is due to the total or partial lack of the hormone insulin secreted by the pancreas and is accompanied by alterations in lipid metabolism.

The current urban and sedentary way of life predisposes many people to suffer from this disease, which has increased significantly in recent years.

In people with diabetes, one of two components of this system fails:

  • The pancreas produces little or no insulin (Type I);
  • The cells of the body do not respond to the insulin that is produced (Type II).

Characteristics of the different degrees of diabetes:

Type I diabetes

La type I diabetes It appears during childhood, adolescence and youth because the body does not produce insulin on a daily basis, this disease has no cure and those affected may suffer hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and in extreme cases ketoacidosis.

  • Age of onset: less than 20 years.
  • Body weight of the person: normal.
  • Insulin level in the blood: decreased (less than 110 mg / dl).
  • Family history: rare.
  • Onset of the disease: abrupt.
  • Urine abnormalities: presence of glucose, that is, color and strong odor.
  • Complications: acute and sustained over time.
  • Treatment: diet + insulin therapy.

Complications:

Elevated blood glucose levels and high blood pressure can affect the retina, vitreous, lens, and optic nerve. The consequences of this are: retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma and even blindness. Although healthy people can also develop these types of conditions, diabetics have a greater predisposition.

Type II diabetes

La type II diabetes It is the most common, in this case the body of the patient does not generate enough insulin or creates a resistance to it. Affected people are not insulin dependent.

Its treatment is very important since in the short term it can affect the amount of energy that the body processes and in the long term it can compromise the internal organs and affect the performance of the person.

  • Age of onset: over 20 years.
  • Body weight of the person: increased to overweight.
  • Insulin level in the blood: normal to increased (above 110 mg / dl).
  • Family history: very common.
  • Onset of the disease: slow and progressive.
  • Urine abnormalities: presence of glucose, that is, color and strong odor.
  • Complications: chronic and increasing with the progress of the disease.
  • Treatment: diet + oral hypoglycemic agents and / or insulin therapy.

Complications:

As type I diabetes this also affects the sight, feet, kidneys, teeth, heart and nervous system, for this reason it is very important to maintain normal blood glucose levels.

Warning symptoms to watch out for to curb diabetes:

  • Increased thirst
  • Need to urinate frequently, even several times at night.
  • Increased appetite
  • Sustained weight loss
  • Fatigue and chronic weakness.
  • Infections, dryness, and itching of the skin.
  • Blurry vision.
  • Wounds that take time to heal.
  • Numbness of the feet
