On March 20, spring will have officially arrived. Yes, we are aware that there is still a month to go before it happens, but who does not want to think about a season in which temperatures begin to warm up and sunny days increase. Although not for everyone the vision of this time will be so positive due to the spring allergies.

Allergic diseases due to pollens affect in our country more than eight million people. And it is in the spring when many plants produce this substance that once dispersed, becomes practically invisible, and many of us suffer the consequences.

Most frequent spring allergies

Allergy is a response of our body what it identifies as a harmful substance. And it is that from the moment it detects these substances, mainly allergens, the immune system is activated to defend us.

In spring they are produced mainly pollen allergies, a substance to which approximately 15% of the population is allergic. Of this percentage, the vast majority are allergic to grasses, followed in descending order by allergy to the olive tree, arizónica, plantain, salsola and parietaria.

El grass pollen it is the culprit of most allergies in the north and center of Spain. In the south, however, much more common than this is the one developed by the olive tree. While on the Mediterranean coast the Parietaria judaica is the queen.

However, mites are important in spring allergy. These insects, which cannot be seen with the naked eye and are usually present on any tissue, can also be found in dust that, when inhaled, enters the lungs. As a consequence the respiratory system becomes irritated. It is not exactly a spring allergy, but it is true that the symptoms are aggravated when the humidity and temperature increase, which is why they are aggravated in spring.

Spring Allergy Symptoms

The symptoms appear after the arrival of spring, especially during the days of greatest pollination. And it is that the concentrations of pollen are not always the same since they depend on the weather conditions of each area.

The symptoms are wide and varied, since the allergy affects different parts of the body. Even so, the most common symptoms in spring allergies are the following:

  • Itchy nose and throat.
  • Conjunctivitis (eye infection).
  • Runny nose, nasal congestion and constant sneezing.
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing, and wheezing (pollen asthma)
    Rhinitis.

Do you suffer from one or more of these symptoms when spring arrives? If this is the case, do not let it pass and consult with your family doctor so that he can give you, if necessary, a treatment. Also, youtake measurements at home, like the ones we shared recently, to soften the symptoms.
