Sounds in guinea pigs and their meaning

Guinea pigs are also known as guinea pigs and they obviously don't speak human language, but that doesn't mean they don't communicate. By using sounds, guinea pigs can say a lot. Although you may not understand all the noises they sometimes make, there are things they do that have a pretty clear meaning and that can help you better understand your pet.

Guinea pig sounds

Guinea pigs make a variety of sounds or vocalizations, some of which most owners will recognize. Happy guinea pigs that just get on with their day often make a variety of squeaks, laughter and silent grunts that also seem to accompany casual interactions. Along with these frequent squeals and giggles, there are a variety of other rather distinctive noises you may hear from your guinea pig. Learn to recognize them!

Whistle

This is a distinctive (and common) vocalization made by guinea pigs and is most often used to communicate anticipation or excitement, particularly about feeding. Sounds like a long, loud screech or whistle And sometimes the hiss can simply serve as a wake-up call. Many guinea pigs will make a very loud hissing noise before receiving some treats when their owners open the refrigerator or take out the food container.

Purr

Purrs have different meanings, depending on the tone of the sound and the accompanying body language. Happy and comfortable guinea pigs will make a deep purr, accompanied by a relaxed and calm posture.

However, if the purr is higher-pitched, especially towards the end of the purr, it is more likely to be an annoying sound. In fact, a guinea pig that makes this noise will be tense. A short purr, sometimes described as a "durr", can indicate fear or uncertainty. usually accompanied by the guinea pig that remains motionless.

Deep rumor

A guinea pig rumble is deeper than a purr. It is done when a male falls in love with a female and sometimes females in season do too. Often accompanied by a kind of 'mating dance', the rumble is also sometimes referred to as a 'motorboat' or 'strutting rumble'.

Teeth chattering

This is aggressive vocalization that is a sign of an agitated or angry guinea pig. Teeth chattering is usually accompanied by the guinea pig showing its teeth, which look like a yawn, and means "back off" or "stay away."

Whistle

Like chattering teeth, this is a sign that a guinea pig is upset. It is like the hiss that a cat makes, like the “blow”.

Shouting

A high-pitched, piercing screech called a screech is a fairly unmistakable call for alarm, fear, or pain from a guinea pig. If you hear this sound, it would be good to check your guinea pigs to make sure that everything is fine and that none of them are hurt.

Whining

A type of whining or groaning squeal may communicate annoyance. or dislike for something you or another guinea pig is doing.

Chirp

It sounds like a bird chirping and is perhaps the least understood (or heard) noise that guinea pigs make. A guinea pig that chirps may also appear to be in a trance state. The meaning of this "song" is the subject of much discussion, without firm conclusions.
