Differences between concealer and highlighter and uses

Highlighter and concealer

Today we find many makeup products for the face that sometimes leave us with doubts. It is not just that we see different uses but that we do not know how to choose them, where to apply them or the difference. Some of the things that have been talked about lately are the concealer and the illuminator and their uses, something that we must clarify.

There are concealers and there are highlighters, and there are also two-in-one products that fulfill both functions, but we must know which one we want. If we have the function of each one and the use very clear, we will know what we have to choose and how to use it when we need it.

The concealer for dark circles and blemishes

Face concealer

The checker is precisely to correct. This concealer usually has a tone equal to or a little lighter than that of the skin, that is why it sometimes overlaps with the highlighter, but its function is to cover, so the correctors that only have this function are more covering and are designed to cover imperfections.

In the case of skins that have marked imperfections such as pimples, redness, rosacea or deep dark circles, there are concealers in various colors that neutralize the undertone so that it is camouflaged. For redness the green tone is used, mauve is for yellowish spots and the yellowest tone for purple dark circles. If the imperfections are not too intense and we only want to cover a little and give light, we can opt for the concealer with illuminator, which has both functions.

The concealer should be used in the area of dark circles, forming a triangle, although without overloading so that it is not too artificial. We can also use it on those small imperfections on the face. It is usually used after the foundation and blends in with a sponge in small touches, so that it blends with the skin and the foundation tone.

Illuminator to give light and highlight

Illuminator on the face

The illuminator for its part cannot be used only to cover dark circles, but it is a product with light reflecting pigments and that serves to highlight certain angles of the face. The illuminator should be taken in a lighter tone than that of the skin, because it is precisely about illuminating. In the vast majority of cases it is in the form of a small brush to be applied in small touches and with precision in certain areas of the face.

The illuminator can be apply under the arch of the eyebrows, the cheekbone, the inner corner of the eye, the Cupid's bow on the lips and the central part of the forehead and nose. On wide noses this will help us to make it look thinner, and if a darker tone is also used on the sides, this feeling will be even more marked.

The highlighter and concealer

This is one of those products that they are a bit multipurpose and that have arisen from the use that many people make of the concealer to illuminate and vice versa. It is a middle ground between the two, so it covers, although not as much as a concealer, and illuminates. It is perfect to cover dark circles that are not too marked and to give light in certain areas by covering imperfections. But if we have pimples or redness or other problems on the face, we must use specific correctors to camouflage, we cannot abuse the illuminator. Although they also usually come in the form of a brush to apply precisely, the truth is that later we will need a sponge to tint and mix with the base. It is also important to apply powders afterwards to mattify and fix these products.
