We talk about dental amalgams, their danger and why it is better to remove them

Dental fillings are a material used to fill cavities caused by cavities. This technique has been used by people around the world for more than 150 years. The problem lies in the materials used to make these amalgams. Usually a mixture of mercury, silver, tin and copper.

In this article we are going to talk about why amalgams should be removed from these materials to all those who have them to avoid health problems.

Why remove the almalgams?

The main reason for removing the almagamas is its high percentage of mercury. Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive substance known today And it is disturbing that amalgam contains more than 50% mercury. This type of amalgam has been widely used due to the great durability of its materials.

This mercury contained in amalgam is released as a vapor and can be inhaled and absorbed by the lungs.

There are also silver amalgams, around which studies have been carried out and have proven to be safe in both adults and children over six years of age.

Therefore, in the case of having only silver amalgams, as long as they are in good condition and do not have cavities underneath, we can keep them in the mouth. On the other hand, if the amalgams are mercury, it would be advisable to remove them.

There are tests that we can carry out to find out if our body is being affected by this mercury. We can also choose to perform some of these tests before making the decision to remove the amalgams. However, the possibility of mercury poisoning will always be there. These tests are of elements, for example of elements in the hair, which analyze the components that are in our hair.

How to avoid the effect of amalgams?

In addition to removing them, it is recommended eliminate heavy metals from our body that have been absorbed. This is done by means of chelating agents, which are antagonistic substances to heavy metals and which can be used to avoid their toxicity in living beings.

Heavy metals cannot be metabolized by the human body and therefore remain in the body intoxicating it. Chelators prevent and reverse the toxic effects of these metals and help eliminate them from the body.

This chelating treatment can be started before, during and after removal of the amalgams.

Preferably we will choose natural chelators to perform this task. For this we can use:

  • Chlorella: an algae that serves as a chelator. We must buy it in trusted sites to have good results, since they must be clean chlorela.
  • Zeolite: another metal grabber.
  • Liposomal glutathione: a very powerful antioxidant, with great benefits for the body, such as for the care of the intestine, but which is also very good at removing heavy metals from the body. It helps the liver to process not only the heavy load it can receive from metals but also when we take a lot of medications.

All these chelators must be supplied under the recommendations of a professional and in the measures indicated to us.

Alternatives to dental amalgam

White teeth

Today there are alternatives to this type of materials such as filled with resins or glass ionomer.

In any case, what we must bear in mind is that there is nothing like prevention. The ideal is to avoid having to put any filling and for this we must be careful with our dental health. For this we leave you some tips to follow:

  • Brush your teeth daily at least twice a day, especially at night, which is when cavities are most likely to develop because we do not generate saliva while we sleep. We should brush right after every meal or after drinking sugary drinks. If you have to take into account that if citrus fruits have been taken after the meal, they can cause a small reaction with brushing and wear the enamel, so in these cases simply a rinse with water should suffice.
  • Incorporate dental floss in our dental hygiene routine. This is a step that most people do not take and yet it is an important step for proper cleaning of the mouth. With the silk we reach the interdental spaces that the brush does not reach. We should use it once a day, preferably at night.
  • Rinses: Mouthwashes help keep our mouth healthy and avoid infections. Mouthwashes should not be abused. Two to three times a week should be more than enough, always after brushing to help remineralize tooth enamel. We must bear in mind that they eliminate all bacteria from the mouth, even the good ones. Always choose those that do not have alcohol and if they are natural even better.
  • Have a balanced diet. As in all points of our health, food is one of the key pillars to be healthy. In addition, there are foods that promote good dental health, as well as others that can damage our enamel or discolor it.
  • Visit our dentist regularly. Not only perform reviews but also mouth cleanings at least once a year.
  • Do not abuse bleachesas they can damage enamel and weaken teeth.
  • If we can't brush our mouths we can help ourselves with sugar-free gums that have xylitol and that stimulate the secretion of saliva which is our natural anticaries agent. Chewing gum is not a substitute for brushing, it is only for those times when we eat out and cannot brush our teeth.

By following these tips, we will be able to avoid tooth problems to a great extent and not have the need to fill them. Now, in those cases that already present amalgams, we recommend talking to a dentist to remove them and replace them with other materials.
