4 homemade cleaning solutions that work

Cleaning

Throughout our journey we have shared with you different tricks to keep our homes clean and tidy. We recently showed you some books on the subject, Do you remember? Today, we add to these resources some more proposing you 4 new cleaning solutions.

These solutions can prepare easily at home with common products such as vinegar, lemon juice or bicarbonate. By learning to use them, you will avoid accumulating at home cans of different cleaning products that you once bought for a specific use and never used again.

There are many actions that we have recommended in the last year to promote a more responsible consumption. This is one more; make your own solutions to clean shower heads and sinks, polish stainless steel or… will prevent you from buying unnecessary and toxic products.

Shower head

Clean shower heads

From time to time and in order to prevent limescale build-up, it is necessary to clean the shower heads and the sump grates. To do it we only need white vinegar and a plastic bag. Choose a bag that will hold everything you want to clean and fill it with vinegar.

Then tie the bag with a rubber band, making sure before all the parts of the heads are well submerged. Forget about the bag for 8 hours. Let the vinegar do its job and then remove it by cleaning with soap and water, one of the simplest cleaning solutions.

Polishing stainless steel

In our homes we have numerous elements of stainless steel. Many appliances are made of this material, but we can also find stainless steel beyond the kitchen. And to clean it and restore its shine we only need two products: vinegar and coconut oil.

Start by spraying the stainless steel surface with vinegar and wiping it with a soft cloth in the direction of the grain. Then, with a clean cloth, apply a small amount of oil, spreading it very well. Finally, gently wipe the entire surface with a clean cloth.

Stainless cleaning and carpet

Remove the smell from the carpet

To keep a carpet in good condition for a longer time it is necessary to vacuum it regularly and of course, remove stains as soon as they occur with specific products. In addition, it is advisable periodically to use formulas that help us to neutralize odors that gets caught. Formulas like the one we share below that combine baking soda with essential oils.

To prepare it, you must mix 125 g in a jar. of bicarbonate, 6 drops of lavender essential oil and 4 drops of tea tree essential oil. Shake well and then sprinkle it on the carpet to let it act for an hour before vacuuming everything. Have a lot of odors accumulated on your carpet and do you need a somewhat more aggressive solution? Add 60 g. of borax to the solution to proceed in the same way.

As long as the solution is working remember close the room to ensure that neither children nor pets enter it. Also, remember to wash your hands well after working with this solution to avoid rubbing it on your face.

Washing machine

Clean the washing machine

We use the washing machine to clean our clothes, but we don't always make sure they are clean. Organic debris, pet hair, detergent, and mold can accumulate in the washing machine. Therefore, every two months it is advisable to carry out a deep cleaning thereof.

The first step will be to remove the dirt from the door seals and the rubber with a solution of vinegar and water, using a cloth or a toothbrush to reach the difficult places. Once this is done, fill the dispenser for liquid detergent with liquid detergent and a glass of vinegar. Run the washer on its hottest cycle and let the vinegar and soap work, breaking down the hard water and disinfecting the machine.

In addition, you can combat the smell of it using sodium bicarbonate. How? Putting 1/3 cup of baking soda in the drum and letting the washing machine run. You don't want to do it all at once; baking soda and vinegar neutralize each other so you won't get what you're looking for.
