Roscón de Reyes

There is no doubt that the roscon de reyes is and will be one of favorite Christmas recipes for many. If we also prepare it at home, it will be much tastier than those sold ready-made.

Other advantages of preparing it at home is the money we save. The price in shops is usually quite high, while doing it ourselves we will be investing only a few euros. The preparation process is easy although it takes some time, so patience is the key to getting the best result.

Ingredients:

  • 500 gr. of strength flour.
  • 1/2 cup of sugar.
  • Egg.
  • 1 glass of milk
  • 120 gr. of butter.
  • 50 gr. fresh yeast.
  • 1 tablespoon of orange blossom water.
  • The skin of a grated orange.

For decoration:

  • White sugar.
  • 1 egg to paint
  • Candied fruit.
  • Chopped almond

Preparation of the roscón de Reyes:

Firstly, we heat the milk until it is warm. Add the yeast, dissolve it and wait a few minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix the sugar, flour, egg, butter to the point of cream (room temperature), orange blossom water and the zest of an orange peel. We are adding the milk with the yeast slowly until a uniform dough is obtained.

We sprinkle a little flour on a smooth surface, knead with our hands, make a ball and the let stand 10 minutes. Next, we knead again to form a ball again.

We grease the surface of a large bowl with butter and incorporate the dough inside. We cover the container with a plastic film and let it rest for 45 or 60 minutes, until the dough has doubled in volume.

We pass the dough to the flat surface and we knead again to remove the indoor air. We cover it with the bowl upside down and let it rest for 15 minutes.

If we want introduce a surprise in the roscón, this would be the moment. We knead again with our hands and make a ball. We stick our fingers in the center to make a hole and give it the shape of a roscón. We will distribute all the dough correctly to achieve a smooth and homogeneous surface.

We put baking paper on the baking tray and place our roscón de reyes on top. We beat an egg and paint it on top. We let the dough rest for the last time until we notice that has increased its volume. Sprinkle white sugar on top and then decorate with the candied fruit and the chopped almond.

We put the tray in the oven, previously heated to 160 ° C. We cook the sweet until it is golden, with heat up and down about 25 or 30 minutes. We will let it cool completely before consuming. We can also fill it with cream, cream or truffle, making a horizontal cut.
