5 tips for storing clothes out of season

Wardrobe

Changing the wardrobe is a common practice in many homes during the spring. Pick up clothes out of season, in this case the winter one, to make room for the summer one, is a must in many homes that either have a small closet in the bedroom or a large collection of clothing.

If this is your case and you are about to store your warm clothes and those other clothes that you will not need during the summer, I advise you to read our following tips. They may seem obvious, but they will help you preserve garments in perfect condition until you need them again.

Wash clothes before putting them away

It may seem obvious but we don't always wash winter clothes, cardigans or sweaters before you pick them up. They are outer garments that, unlike others, we do not put in the washing machine regularly after each use. However, in this case and taking into account that they will remain stored for at least 4 months, it is important to do so.

Wash and fold clothes

The garments, especially those that have direct contact with our body, are impregnated with creams, essential oils and perfumes we use. These can make them really attractive to some unwanted insects and also enhance the appearance of spots over time. Hence, washing each of the garments that we are going to collect is essential for its correct conservation.

Fold clothes well

If you don't have room in the closet, folding clothes is the best way to store clothes out of season. If you fold these properly you can, in addition, not only maximize space in storage boxes, but also avoid marks on them that later will be difficult to remove on those more delicate garments.

The ideal is to divide the garments by categories, fold each one of them using the Marie Kondo method for store them vertically. This technique helps to optimize space in the drawers and, therefore, also in boxes with similar dimensions, in addition to preventing the garments from piling up on top of each other, thus crushing the bottom.

Use the right boxes

There are numerous boxes on the market in which you could store your clothes out of season. However, not all let clothes breathe. Plastic boxes, especially if they are not closed properly and exposed to light or moisture, can suffer condensation.

If you can choose, the ideal way to store clothes out of season are boxes made in natural fibers such as linen or cotton.  These do allow clothing to breathe, providing an appropriate storage location.

How to store seasonal clothes

Protect garments

Even if you are going to keep the non-seasonal clothes protected, it never hurts to provide certain protection against moth. You can use the products that for this purpose you will find in any supermarket or bet on something more natural such as bags of dried lavender that will also perfume the clothes.

Store the boxes in a dark and dry place

Once the rapa has been stored in boxes, it is time to find a place for them. The ideal is store them in a dark and dry place to avoid problems. You can place them in the upper parts of the cabinets, use the storage of your mattress and if there is no other left, even make a place for them under the bed. Avoid especially humid places such as the basement and those in which heat and humidity converge, such as cabins located in the attics.

As we had already told you, the tips may be obvious but we have thought it important to remember them being aware that in a few weeks many of you will face this change of wardrobe. Although following our advice may seem laborious, it won't take you more than a couple of days to get everything ready! And by doing so you will ensure that you can enjoy your favorite clothes longer.

Do you change wardrobe? If so, will you follow these tips? I confess that although my wardrobe is not particularly large, it is enough to store all my clothes, both summer and winter, a possibility to which adopting the Marie Kondo method and minimizing my wardrobe has contributed both.
